Welcome To The Sunday View

This weekend Kim and I hit a few second hand stores to see what treasures we could find. I of course always have an eye out for cameras and I must say I found some good stuff. So I think it's time to do another retro camera (un)review. This time we take a look at a hardly (if at all) used Fuji FinePix A340. I picked up this A340 at a thrift store near our home for the tidy sum of $10.00 . I got the camera (of course) but also the original box, cords, batteries and all of the documentation. There was even an extra memory card. It came from factory with a 16mb XD card but there was also a 64mb XD. Enough to save 33 pictures with the camera set to the highest quality of image. According to This Review the A340 went for around $199 new and was produced in 2004. It features a 4 Megapixel image sensor and a 3x optical zoom lens. Here are some pictures of the one I purchased yesterday.

And here are some sample images I shot today. Let me note that I think the camera had a little difficulty focusing due to some light snowfall. It seems that the snow tricked the camera into focusing on it instead of the main subject. And of course it may just be the 4 Megapixel sensor on a 14 year old camera.

These were all shot at the Elmwood Park Zoo in Norristown Pennsylvania.

My take on the Fuji FinePix A340? I think the over quality is pretty good for a 14 year old camera. It is good for snapshot photography for sure though it may be a bit of a fair weather friend. Literally I would avoid precipitation for more than the obvious reasons. Mainly focusing. But falling snow is probably the main issue. And it may work better when out of Auto mode even though there is little manual control. Put simply I wouldn't mind having it with me for that odd occasion here and there. But I rather have one of my small Canons or even a newer Fuji on hand.

On another note the low capacity memory card made me think before shooting. It was a lot like the old days of shooting film where I had to pick and choose so as not to run out of space (film).

Welcome To The "Throwback Thursday" View

Today's throwback post really is just that. It goes back to my early days of digital photography. And it also happens to contain one of my all time favorite images. Shot on March 5, 2003 with the amazing Fuji S602Z at Seaworld in San Diego California is this awesome creature.

The Fuji S602Z was an awesome camera. It was a bit expensive in it's day ringing up at US$750.00 in 2003. That's around US$950.00 today. That doesn't sound like a lot but most long zoom bridge cameras cost much less now. But at the time it was one of the better options out there. I still have that camera. In fact I recently obtained a couple CF memory cards and a CF card reader. Maybe I'll take it out again and have some retro fun. Sounds like a project. Hmm.

Exploration Photography Daily View - December 30, 2015

Hi and welcome to the Daily View!

Moving along with the older photos I would like to get a bit more "vintage" today. For your viewing pleasure (I hope) here is a shot from around 2002. I'm not 100% sure of the year but it's from around there somewhere. I do know however it is SeaWorld in San Diego California. This guy was looking for some more of the minnows I just fed him.

I scanned this from a print that was made from a digital image from my Fuji S602Z camera. Say that 10 times real fast :) I loved that camera and actually still have it but am unable to find a memory card that fits it. Also I am not sure if I have shared this before or not. I don't think so but of I did please enjoy a second look.

February 6, 2015 - Photo Of The Day

Hi and welcome to my blog! Today like most Fridays I am sharing one of my "retro" photos. For those who don't know, these photos may be a couple years old or maybe a decade or more old. Today we go back to March 3, 2003 to the world famous San Diego Zoo. San Diego may not have the oldest zoo (Philadelphia has that) but it does have the largest zoo in the nation. And I consider it a "must visit" if you are in the area. And here is today's photo.

This is of course a group of pink flamingos. Also known as a "stand" or "Flamboyance". I shot this with my Fuji S602Z.

I would also like to share yet another shot I made of the moon last week. This was on Saturday after we returned home from Longwood and I just got around to processing it.

October 31, 2014 - Photo of The Day

Happy Halloween!

It's Friday and that means another "retro" picture for today's photo. I kind of got off track last week and posted a new photo. That's okay though, there are no hard and fast rules here.

Today we go back to February of 2005. This was shot at the San Diego Zoo when Kim, Terry and I went on a cruise from Long Beach California to Ensenada, Mexico.

I captured this with my Fuji S602Z digital camera. By today's standards this is a low tech camera but in it's day it was great. I am still amazed at the quality of some of the photos I shot with it.
