For today's photo I would like to share another scene from along the Schuylkill River that I shot on Saturday. This one is in full color and shows off the turning of the leaves quite nicely. As we walked along the trail I saw this and marveled at how the bright sun shined through and was muted ever so slightly as it was absorbed by the trees. I knew right away that I had to share it with you. I hope you enjoy my reproduction of the moment as much as I enjoyed the original.

Today as I continue with photos of our Saturday walk along the Schuylkill River I would like to share something that I have posted here many times in the past. I know absolutely no history about it and don't really know it's age. And I can say for sure that twenty-five years or so ago when I first saw it it was a bit more "complete". I am talking of course about the old stone house that is at the beginning of the Schuylkill River Trail in Valley Forge National Park.

One day I'll have to make an effort to learn a little about this house. Though I did one time ask someone at the Visitor's Center but they didn't know what I was talking about let alone know any real documented history about it.

Welcome To The Saturday View

Kim and I started out the day with a trip to the Schuylkill River Trail. Part of Valley Forge National Park. We have been there many times but it has been a while and we could not have picked a better day. With temperatures hovering around 70° F (21° C) it was very comfortable. The plan was to walk about a mile and turn around. But just like last week at the park we ended up going a bit further. In the end we walked about five and a half miles. We walked to Pawling's Farm actually. Also part of Valley Forge and home to the 300 plus year old sycamore tree I have shared in the past. And just like last week's walk I sure do feel it. but not quite as bad so I guess I'm making progress.

Of course walking along a river you come across some nice scenery. And you know that I am going to share what I saw. Today I would like to show you this.

While resting up for a few minutes on a bench along the river I shot a minute of video. It was so quiet and so serene I just had to record it. Remember to view at full screen and at the highest resolution you can. And turn up the volume to enjoy the quiet sounds of nature.

For this Friday's view I am sharing one more photo from last Sunday's walk in the park. The Norristown Farm Park that is for those who are new to my blog.

Of all of the things I like to shoot water is near the top of my list. Also up there is a good natural setting. And I am sharing both today. The reflections seen here are what caught my eye.

On another note...

Most of my photos include what I refer to as "Technical Info". This info is generally referred to as EXIF data and is embedded in a picture file automatically by most modern cameras. I share this data for anyone interested in what settings were used during the picture making process.

To freshen things up a bit I am tinkering with different ways to present EXIF data with you. And for today's post I am trying this.

This is simply a screenshot I grabbed in Photoshop. I am working with other methods and may try different ones over the next few posts until I find something I like best. Stay tuned.

Today as I continue to share photos from our "walk in the park" yesterday I am shifting away from Autumn colors. In fact I am shifting away from color altogether. When I saw this I knew right away that it had to be presented in black and white. It actually took me a while to get it where I thought it was right. I tried to bring out as much detail as I could and at the same time not wash anything away.

Obviously no longer in use as evidenced by the hanging insulators and the fact there is indeed no wires to be found. I'm not sure if this pole carried telephone or power lines. Perhaps both? I am pretty certain though that it was used by the Norristown State Hospital. Just about all of the land that the park occupies was part of the hospital grounds at one time.

Today was quite a day my friends. Down the street from our house is a really nice and quite large State Park. On the other side of the park is one of my favorite local destinations. The Elmwood Park Zoo. Well not really right on the other side. It's on the other side after you throw in some twists and turns and a little traveling along some main roads. In all we are about three miles away from the zoo. A trip that usually takes us about five minutes in a car. Except today we didn't drive. We walked. Walking takes about a hour. But at least there was a lot of nice scenery along the way. And over the next couple days I will be sharing some of it with you. So to start things off I would like to show you this.

I set out to shoot some Fall colors and I think this fits the bill nicely. Nothing quite says Fall better than a yellow dried up corn field.

There are several kinds of photography and each has it's own time and place. There is of course art photography which itself branches off in way too many directions for me to cover here. And then there is the more common but in my opinion every bit as important casual or snapshot photography. In fact I will go on record and say it is the most important genre. Why? Because snapshots provide an insight into everyday life. They capture moments as they are. There is generally no planning or pretense and for all intents and purposes they are true "time machines". Don't get me wrong. I love the art side of the craft. It's what I "practice" and like to think that I have grown and improved in over the years. But I also have a soft spot for the casual side. And to that end I bring you today's photo.

Today did not start well for me. I felt horrible when I got up. I even slept in a couple hours which I almost never do. But when I finally did arise and made my way to the kitchen for my morning beverage I looked out the window into our yard and saw this.

When I saw this I immediately grabbed my camera and without giving it a second thought engaged Full Auto mode, aimed and shot. And it's a good thing I did. Because as soon as I shot this he jumped down and ran off. As you can see by looking at his eye my flash went off. I think that is what scared him. Strange though because I was about ten yards away. As an aside I have shot just over ten thousand frames and this is maybe the tenth or so time the flash was used. And probably the fifth or sixth time I shot in Auto. But if I hadn't this moment would never had been captured.

Snapshot photography stepped in and did it's job!

Welcome To The Saturday View

For the past couple days I have been noticing something unusual in our front yard. Well unusual for October that is. Then today it got a little more unusual. And not for the good.

What we have is a handful of dandelions on our lawn. Not terribly out of place but being Autumn they really shouldn't be there. But what is bad is I saw a very young bee on the dandelion. What I am thinking is that the weather has confused mother nature and things are going awry. I am no expert but common sense would dictate that the bee will definitely not last through Winter. And that means less bees in the Spring and that means flowers and vegetables will be affected. Let's hope things straighten out.

So for today's photo I would like to share our Autumn oddity.

Welcome To The Monday View

Today I am putting a little spin on the ball. You may have noticed that I am no longer including a "before" image with my daily posts. I did this to streamline my process a little and to be honest save a little time. Well today I am switching up and instead of a post processed image you will see the "straight out of camera" or "SOOC" image.

This was shot during the sunrise in Atlantic City a few weeks or so ago. At this point I was messing around and just experimenting a little. Looking back though I really like this one. I may (or may not) toss it through Photoshop to see what I can do with it but for now enjoy what my camera saw. The only editing I did was converting it from a Canon cr2 Raw Image to a file that is recognized by everyday web browsers. In this and in most cases that would be a PNG or Portable Network Image file.

Is this the way it looked in person? Pretty much. The colors are a little off but not by much. And the lighting is perfectly correct. It could use some tweaking but for now this is it.

Today was a rainy one around here and early on I was unsure as to whether or not I would get any shooting in. There was no way I was setting up my camera gear where it might get wet so the Cafe was pretty much out. And then as I was looking out our front door I saw it. Today's photo. It is a simple subject but one that most of us probably don't pay too much mind to. An everyday, garden variety moth. He was on the outside of our storm door. I don't shoot through glass often but with the light shining through I thought this was perfect.
